Preparedness

Now is the Time To Prepare for the Future

With more and more people getting vaccinated, it feels like there is light at the end of a long
tunnel. However, the hope of spring brings an annual Oklahoma challenge—severe weather.
These challenges, along with ice storms and extreme temperatures this winter, have kept
preparedness at the front of our minds.

Right now, take the opportunity to download the new 2025 Edmond Stake and Ward Emergency Preparedness Plan below, fill it out, and store it with your emergency kit!

Use the Time You Have

Things To Consider

Being prepared will allow you to face storms with more peace and also allow you to minister
to neighbors and friends during times of need. Preparedness makes space for the Spirit to
speak peace to our souls. Even if the worst should happen, we remember the example of
Peter in the Sea of Galilee. “Like Peter, we in this life learn that temporal supports
sometimes crumble—or sink—in the face of life’s tempests. We find that there are forces
capable of upsetting our most carefully improvised plans. But we, like Peter, can discover
that our Savior stands nearby, though perhaps dimly seen, ready to help us if we will but
reach out to him and accept his divine assistance. We need not struggle alone.”

Emergency Plan

Use family home evening or individual study time to create or review an emergency plan. Download and fill out the new 2021 Stake Emergency Preparedness Plan to get started!

In addition, The City of Edmond has a workbook you can download here and complete together and the State of Oklahoma has a website with many resources if you have special circumstances to consider.

Shelter

Clean out your storm shelter, if you have one, or identify a safe place within your home for when severe weather is predicted.

Gather Contact Info & Documents

Gather the names and phone numbers of neighbors so you can check on them before and after severe weather. Having a strong network of support can help us ensure the most vulnerable among us get the help they need.

Gather financial, insurance, and other critical documentation. If possible, store a copy away from your home in case of an emergency.

Water

Frozen pipes and water shortages highlighted the immediate need for water. Work to build
up a supply of emergency water.

72 Hour Kit

With each trip to the store, try to grab a few extra staples so you can have at least 72 hours of food available to you in your home.

Check your 72-hour kit and make sure items are not expired or damaged.

Assuring Children

If you have children in your home, they may require extra assurance this storm season with so many regular routines disrupted. The State of Oklahoma has a workbook with children’s activities and advice for parents.

Look around You

Continue to Minister

If a neighbor or someone you minister to may not be able to complete these preparations on their own, we encourage you to think creatively about how you might assist while maintaining a safe distance that protects both your health and the health of those who are elderly or in a high-risk group.

We are so grateful for all your efforts during this time of upheaval and pray for your continued health and safety.
